Ashley Piercing in Calgary
A bold lower-lip piercing where the jewelry exits through the lip itself, creating a striking, centered focal point.
What is an Ashley piercing?
An Ashley piercing is a variation of a lower lip piercing where the jewelry appears only on the front of the lip. The piercing passes through the lower lip and exits at the center of the lip’s front surface (the vermilion), rather than below the lip line like a standard labret or vertical labret.
From the outside, you see a single decorative end in the middle of the lower lip. Inside the mouth, a flat disc rests against the inner surface of the lip—similar to a labret post. Because the jewelry goes through the body of the lip itself instead of underneath, Ashley piercings are more anatomy-dependent and need to be planned carefully.
At Tribal Expression in Calgary, we approach Ashley piercings with extra attention to tissue thickness, lip movement, and long-term comfort. Placement, jewelry style, and sizing all play a big role in how well this piercing heals and wears over time.
Am I a good candidate for an Ashley piercing?
Ashley piercings are not suitable for everyone. They depend heavily on the shape, thickness, and movement of your lower lip. During your consultation, your piercer will look at:
- Lip thickness and tissue quality – There must be enough healthy tissue to support the piercing without tearing or thinning excessively.
- Natural lip position at rest – Ensures the jewelry sits in a comfortable, flattering location when your face is relaxed.
- Smile and talking patterns – We check how much your lip stretches and rolls when you speak and smile.
- Teeth and gum position – Important for the angle and length of the post inside the mouth.
- Existing lip piercings – If you already have labrets or vertical labrets, we design the Ashley to complement them.
If your lip anatomy makes an Ashley piercing more likely to migrate, thin out, or become uncomfortable, we’ll be honest about that and may recommend alternative placements (such as a labret or vertical labret) that give a similar visual impact with less risk.
How much does an Ashley piercing hurt?
The lower lip is expressive tissue, so you’ll feel this piercing—but it’s still quick and manageable. Most clients describe:
- A sharp, brief pinch as the needle passes through the body of the lip.
- A warm or “full” feeling in the lip afterward.
- Mild to moderate swelling over the first few days.
We support the tissue carefully and guide you through calm, steady breathing so the piercing itself is over in a moment. The more noticeable part is the “new lip” feeling as you adjust to the jewelry and swelling during the first week.
How long does an Ashley piercing take to heal?
Ashley piercings typically take around:
- 8–10 weeks for early healing.
- 3–4 months for full internal healing.
You’ll likely notice:
- Days 1–5: Swelling, tenderness, and a “puffy lip” feeling. Eating and talking may feel different.
- Weeks 2–4: Swelling decreases; the lip feels less reactive but can still be sensitive to stretching or bumping.
- Weeks 4–10: The piercing stabilizes. This is usually when we discuss downsizing the post to a shorter, more comfortable length.
Because the Ashley piercing passes through the lip itself, consistent aftercare and timely downsizing are especially important for minimizing pressure, friction, and long-term tissue stress.
Ashley piercing aftercare
Ashley aftercare focuses on keeping the outside of the lip clean, supporting the inside of the mouth, and managing swelling and movement.
Outside care – the front of the lip
- Use our recommended hypochlorous acid aftercare spray 1–2 times daily (or as directed).
- Spray directly over the jewelry and allow the solution to sit for 30–60 seconds.
- Gently pat dry with a clean, disposable paper towel—avoid rubbing, twisting, or lifting the lip to “check” the piercing.
Inside care – disc and oral tissue
- Rinse gently with plain water after meals to clear food particles.
- If needed, use a mild, alcohol-free mouth rinse once or twice daily.
- Avoid strong antiseptic or whitening mouthwashes that can dry and irritate the tissue.
- Brush your teeth as normal, but be mindful around the disc and post.
Swelling & habits
- Eat softer foods for the first few days and take smaller bites.
- Avoid biting or chewing the jewelry or accidentally catching it between your teeth.
- Minimize smoking or vaping—they slow healing and dry the tissue.
- Try not to stretch the lip excessively (big exaggerated expressions) during early healing.
If you notice a “pressure line” where the jewelry seems to sink into the lip, or a persistent sore spot inside the mouth, contact us—those can be signs the post needs to be downsized or adjusted sooner rather than later.
What jewelry is best for an Ashley piercing?
Ashley piercings are almost always done with a flat-back labret post, carefully sized to balance swelling, comfort, and long-term tissue health.
-
Flat-back labret posts
A smooth disc sits inside the mouth, with a single decorative end on the center of the lower lip. -
Implant-grade materials
ASTM F-136 titanium manufactured in-house at Tribal Expression, or 14k/18k solid gold ends for a fine jewelry look. -
Threadless or internally threaded systems
Smooth through the tissue and secure for everyday wear. -
Careful length and downsizing
We start with a post long enough to allow for swelling, then shorten it once the lip has settled to reduce movement and pressure on the tissue.
Because we manufacture jewelry in Calgary, we can fine-tune post lengths, disc sizes, and decorative tops specifically for your lip anatomy and the way your Ashley piercing sits when you talk and smile.
Risks and how we minimize them
Ashley piercings, because they pass through the body of the lip, carry a higher risk of:
- Lip tissue thinning or shrinking over time if jewelry is too heavy or too tight.
- Migration or shifting if the lip is not thick enough or is stressed repeatedly.
- Pressure-related discomfort if downsizing is delayed.
We minimize these risks by being selective about candidates, using high-quality jewelry, placing the piercing in the healthiest part of the lip, and encouraging timely downsizing and regular check-ins if anything feels off.
How we perform Ashley piercings at Tribal Expression
Your Ashley piercing appointment typically includes:
-
Consultation & anatomy assessment
We evaluate lip thickness, shape, and movement, as well as your teeth and gums, to determine if an Ashley piercing is a good fit for you. -
Placement & marking
We mark where the jewelry will sit on the lip, then have you check it in a relaxed position and while talking and smiling so you can see how it lines up with your features. -
Visible sterilization
Your jewelry, needle, and tools are sterilized individually in a Statim 5000 cassette sterilizer. You can see your cassette run before anything is used. -
Piercing process
The lip is cleaned and gently supported. The needle passes through in a smooth, controlled motion, and the labret post follows immediately. We check how the jewelry sits in both relaxed and expressive positions. -
Aftercare & downsize plan
You leave with written aftercare, product recommendations, and a clear timeline for when to return for downsizing and follow-up.

Ashley Piercing FAQ
Is everyone a good candidate for an Ashley piercing?
No. Ashley piercings are anatomy-dependent and require a lip that can safely support the jewelry. During your consultation, we’ll assess your lip thickness, shape, and movement and let you know honestly whether an Ashley piercing is a good idea or if another option would be safer.
How long does an Ashley piercing take to heal?
Most Ashley piercings take about 8–10 weeks for early healing and 3–4 months for full internal healing. A downsize to a shorter post is typically recommended once swelling has resolved to improve comfort and protect the lip tissue.
Can an Ashley piercing cause lip thinning or migration?
It can if the anatomy isn’t ideal, the jewelry is too heavy or too tight, or if the piercing is repeatedly irritated. Careful candidate selection, proper placement and sizing, quality jewelry, and good habits help reduce the risk. We’ll walk you through all of those factors before you decide.
