For more than 23 years, Tribal Expression has made individual sterilization and infection-control procedures a major part of professional piercing.

Most piercing studios purchase finished jewelry from outside suppliers. Tribal Expression took a very different approach: we built our own local jewelry manufacturing operation here in Calgary, Alberta.
Much of the titanium jewelry used for our kids ear piercing appointments in Calgary is manufactured locally by the Tribal Expression team. That includes professional children's piercing jewelry made from ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium, with options ranging from simple titanium beads to gemstones, hearts, stars, moons and colorful anodized titanium designs.
For parents, this means the jewelry placed into a fresh ear piercing is not simply an unknown product arriving in a package from somewhere else in the world. We are directly involved in how much of our professional body jewelry is designed, machined, finished, polished and prepared for use in our Calgary piercing studio.

Age, Identification & Your Child's Consent
Children's ear piercing involves more than choosing earrings. Before your appointment, there are a few important things every parent or guardian should know.
Kids Ear Piercing Ages 5–12
Tribal Expression's dedicated children's earlobe piercing service is available for children 5 through 12 years old.
We do not pierce infants or children younger than five as part of this service.
That decision comes from decades of experience working with children. At approximately age five and older, children are generally better able to understand a simple explanation of what is happening, communicate how they are feeling and participate in the appointment.
Every child develops differently, so age alone does not determine whether a child feels ready. We work with the child who is actually sitting in front of us.
What Identification Do We Need?
Please bring identification for both the parent or legal guardian and the child.
- Parent or legal guardian identification is required.
- Identification for the child is also required.
- The parent/guardian relationship must be reasonably established.
- If surnames do not match, bring appropriate guardianship or supporting documentation.
- If you are unsure what documents apply to your family's situation, call us before the appointment.
Body Autonomy Matters
Your Permission Matters — And So Does Their “Yes”
A parent can approve the appointment, but we still want the child to be an active participant in getting their ears pierced.
We explain the process in language appropriate for their age, answer their questions and let them know they can tell us when they need to pause.
Some children are immediately excited and ready. Others need to see the room, meet their piercer, choose their earrings and ask several questions before they feel comfortable.
Both are completely normal.
What If My Child Changes Their Mind?
We respect it.
We are not interested in holding a frightened child down or turning an ear piercing into a battle simply because an appointment was booked.
Sometimes a child only needs a little more information or time. Sometimes today simply isn't their day.
The goal is a positive experience, not forcing a piercing to happen at any cost.

Does Getting Your Ears Pierced Hurt?
Yes, there is a very quick moment of discomfort — but the actual piercing happens extremely fast.
We believe children deserve a truthful answer rather than being told they “won't feel anything.”
When a child asks us what it will feel like, we often start with experiences they already understand.
Those are experiences many children can already picture. We explain that an ear piercing is also a quick moment, and many kids tell us afterward that it happened much faster and was easier than they expected.
Everyone experiences discomfort differently, so we never promise that a piercing is completely painless.
What We Tell Nervous Kids
Being nervous does not mean you're not brave.
- You can ask us as many questions as you want.
- We will explain what is going to happen.
- Mom, Dad or your guardian can stay close to you.
- You can tell us when you need a moment.
- The actual piercing part is very quick.
- We will never make fun of you for being nervous.
What If My Child Is Really Nervous?
Nervous children are not unusual at Tribal Expression. In fact, working through those feelings is part of what makes specializing in kids piercing different from simply offering children's appointments.
We can slow things down, talk through the equipment, let your child become familiar with the room and help redirect their attention when appropriate.
Sometimes confidence comes from understanding exactly what is going to happen. Other children do better when the conversation becomes fun and the piercing itself stops being the centre of attention.

What is the best age to get a child's ears pierced?
There is no single age that is right for every family or every child.
At Tribal Expression, our dedicated children's earlobe piercing service is for ages 5–12. By around age five, many children are better able to understand a simple explanation of what will happen, communicate with their piercer and actively participate in the experience.

Why doesn't Tribal Expression pierce babies or children under 5?
Our minimum age of five is a deliberate Tribal Expression studio policy.
We want children to be able to understand what is happening, communicate with us, participate willingly and tell their piercer when they need a pause.
Ear piercing can become a meaningful childhood milestone. We prefer the child to actually be part of that decision and memory.
Does a parent or legal guardian need to be present?
Yes. A parent or legal guardian must attend the child's piercing appointment and complete the required consent process.
We also want the parent present for jewelry selection, aftercare instructions and any questions that come up during the appointment.
What identification do I need for my child's ear piercing?
Tribal Expression requires identification for both the parent/legal guardian and the child.
Please check your identification before leaving home so an appointment does not have to be delayed.
What if my child and I have different last names?
If the parent or guardian and child have different surnames, please bring appropriate guardianship or supporting documentation that establishes the relationship.
Family situations can vary. If you are unsure what applies to you, call Tribal Expression at 403-210-2442 before your appointment.
Does my child have to agree to getting their ears pierced?
Yes. Parent or guardian permission is required, but we also want the child participating willingly.
We explain what will happen using age-appropriate language, answer questions and make sure children know they can tell us when they need a moment.
Consent and body autonomy are important parts of the Tribal Expression way.
What happens if my child gets scared or changes their mind?
We slow down.
Sometimes a child needs another explanation, a little more time or a chance to become familiar with the room and their piercer.
If they ultimately decide they are not ready, we respect that. Our goal is not to turn a memorable milestone into a battle simply because an appointment was booked.
Do kids ear piercings require an appointment?
Yes. Children's piercing appointments are booked so we can reserve appropriate time for your family.

Does getting your ears pierced hurt for a child?

We often ask whether they have ever had a needle at the doctor's office or dentist because those are sensations many kids already understand. Many children tell us afterward that their piercing was quicker and easier than they expected.
How should I prepare a nervous child for ear piercing?
Keep the explanation simple, positive and truthful. Avoid surprising them with the appointment or promising that they will feel absolutely nothing.
Let them know the uncomfortable part is very quick, that they can ask questions and that you will remain close to them.
Choosing their own earrings can also help make the experience feel like something they are participating in rather than something being done to them.
What if my child cries or gets emotional?
That's okay.
Being nervous, getting emotional or needing reassurance does not mean a child has failed. Children respond differently to new experiences.
Our job is to communicate with them and respond to the child who is actually in front of us, not expect every five-year-old or ten-year-old to react the same way.
Can you work with sensory-sensitive or neurodivergent children?
We can adjust the pace and communication style of an appointment around the individual child whenever practical.

For our core children's starter options, Tribal Expression uses ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium.
With fresh piercings, knowing the actual material, finish and construction is more useful than relying only on marketing terms such as “hypoallergenic.”
We generally avoid unknown metals, plated fashion jewelry and sterling silver in fresh piercings.
What does ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium mean?
ASTM F136 is a material specification for a titanium alloy used in implant applications and high-quality professional body jewelry.
For parents, the important point is traceability: we want to know what material is actually going into a fresh piercing rather than accepting an unidentified metal.

Yes. Available children's titanium options can include gemstones and decorative designs such as hearts, stars, moons and other shapes.
Selection and colors vary with current inventory, but choosing their own first earrings is an important part of the experience for many kids.
Is solid gold suitable for children's ear piercings?
Appropriate solid 14k or higher gold jewelry made from a suitable, well-documented alloy can be an option for professional piercing.
The fact that something is called “gold” is not enough by itself. The alloy, construction and finish matter.
What about gold-plated or sterling silver earrings?
We do not recommend unknown plated jewelry or sterling silver as our standard jewelry for a fresh children's piercing.
Plating can wear and exposes the underlying metal, while the actual alloy of inexpensive fashion jewelry may also be poorly documented.
Can nickel cause problems with children's earrings?
Nickel is a common cause of contact dermatitis and is one reason material documentation matters, particularly for children described as having sensitive ears.
Instead of choosing jewelry based only on labels such as “sensitive” or “hypoallergenic,” ask what the actual material is.

Qualifying Tribal Expression locally manufactured jewelry is backed by our lifetime jewelry warranty.

Healing, Cleaning, Swimming, Sleeping & Sports
How should I clean my child's new ear piercings?
Our standard routine is cleaning twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart.
Follow the full instructions provided by your piercer because aftercare is about consistency, not repeatedly touching or over-cleaning the ears.

What does Tribal Expression recommend for cleaning kids ear piercings?
Tribal Expression currently prefers an appropriate hypochlorous acid (HOCl) piercing-care product for routine cleaning.
We used sterile saline exclusively for many years and saline remains an acceptable cleaning option, but HOCl is now our preferred routine cleaner.
Can I still use sterile saline on my child's piercing?
Yes. Sterile saline remains an acceptable piercing cleanser.
Tribal Expression used saline as its primary aftercare product for many years before moving toward HOCl as our preferred routine option.
Should I use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or antibiotic ointment?
We do not recommend routine use of alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or oil-based ointments on a healing piercing.
Follow the piercing aftercare provided at your appointment. If a healthcare professional is treating a medical issue, follow their medical instructions.
Should I twist or rotate my child's new earrings?
No. Properly fitted professional piercing jewelry does not need to be routinely twisted or spun.
Unnecessary handling can irritate the piercing and creates additional opportunities to introduce contamination.
Can my child shower or bathe with new ear piercings?
Normal bathing and showering can be part of everyday life during healing.
Avoid unnecessary handling, harsh products on the piercing and anything that repeatedly snags or irritates the jewelry. Continue the normal aftercare schedule provided by your piercer.
Can my child swim after getting their ears pierced?
When possible, we recommend planning a new piercing away from vacations or periods of frequent swimming.
If swimming does occur during healing, clean the piercing once afterward and then return to the normal twice-daily schedule rather than repeatedly over-cleaning it.

How should my child sleep with freshly pierced ears?
Try to minimize direct pressure on the healing ear.
One simple method is using two pillows with a small gap — approximately one inch — between them so the ear can rest over the gap rather than being compressed against a pillow.
Can my child play sports after getting their ears pierced?
Sports require some planning because fresh piercings can be bumped, snagged or compressed.
If possible, scheduling during an off-season is ideal for contact sports or activities involving helmets.
Most importantly, check your child's league or governing-body rules before piercing. A referee may require jewelry to be removed even though newly pierced ears should not be routinely removing and reinserting jewelry.
What about hockey, football, ski or bike helmets?
Anything pressing directly against a healing piercing can cause irritation.
Check how the helmet fits around the ears before deciding when to schedule the piercing. Planning around the season is often easier than trying to manage repeated pressure on a fresh piercing.
Can my child wear headphones with new ear piercings?
Avoid headphones or headsets that place pressure directly against the fresh piercing.
Keep headphones clean and wipe appropriate contact surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, allowing them to dry before use.
How do I keep long hair from snagging new earrings?
Keep hair away from the ears as much as practical during early healing and be careful when brushing, washing or styling.
Hair wrapped around a post should be gently untangled rather than pulled away from the ear.
How long do children's earlobe piercings take to heal?
Think of healing in stages rather than one finish line.
The first approximately six weeks are the initial healing stage. From roughly six weeks through six months, the piercing continues strengthening and becoming more tolerant of everyday life.
Full stability can take approximately 6–12 months. Looking healed on the outside does not necessarily mean the channel is fully mature internally.
Why does my child's starter earring have a longer post?
Initial posts are fitted with a small amount of additional space — commonly around 1–2 mm — to accommodate the early healing period and potential swelling.
Once that stage settles, the extra length can become unnecessary and may snag more easily, which is why professional downsizing is important.
When should my child's piercing jewelry be downsized?
We commonly assess children's earlobe jewelry for downsizing at approximately 6–8 weeks, depending on how the piercing is healing.
Downsizing is currently $20 per ear.
Can my child change earrings after six weeks?
Six weeks should not be treated as meaning the piercing is completely healed.
Around that stage we may be assessing the professional starter jewelry for downsizing, but the piercing continues strengthening for months afterward.
Avoid frequent jewelry changes while the channel is still young and easily irritated.
Swelling, Crusties, Snags & When Something Looks Wrong
What is normal after a child's ears are pierced?
Mild redness and tenderness during the first couple of days can be normal.
Small amounts of blood spotting and normal healing crust around the jewelry can also occur.
The important thing is the overall direction: a piercing should generally become calmer with time rather than becoming progressively more painful, hot and inflamed.
What are warning signs that a child's ear piercing needs attention?
Contact us or seek appropriate care when something changes significantly rather than continuing to improve.
Examples that deserve attention include increasing pain, significant heat, worsening swelling, abnormal discharge, or a piercing that had calmed down and then suddenly becomes significantly inflamed again.

What should I do if the jewelry looks like it is sinking into the ear?
Contact the studio promptly.
Excess swelling or jewelry that no longer has adequate room can cause the front or back to begin pressing into the tissue.
Do not wait for the jewelry to become deeply embedded before asking for help.
Why does the earring post suddenly look too long after a few weeks?
That's often because the initial swelling has settled.
Starter posts deliberately include extra room during early healing. Once that space is no longer needed, the jewelry can appear noticeably longer.
That is often the signal that it is time to ask about a professional downsize rather than leaving excess post length available to snag.
What should I do if my child's new earring gets hit or snagged?
Clean the piercing once following the impact and inspect the jewelry to make sure it still appears properly positioned.
A cold pack can be used with a clean barrier between it and the ear when appropriate.
If there is significant bleeding, increasing swelling, unusual pain or concern about the jewelry's position, contact the studio.
What should I do if my child's new earring falls out?
Contact Tribal Expression as soon as practical.
Fresh piercing channels can tighten quickly. Do not force jewelry through a channel that has started closing or feels resistant.
We can assess whether professional reinsertion is appropriate.
Should I force an earring back through if the hole starts closing?
No.
Forcing jewelry through tissue can create new trauma and make the situation more complicated. Contact us for a professional reinsertion assessment instead.
Should I remove the earrings if I think my child's piercing is infected?
Do not automatically remove the jewelry yourself simply because you suspect infection.
Contact Tribal Expression for piercing-related guidance and seek an appropriate healthcare professional if infection or your child's health is a concern.
Removing jewelry without appropriate guidance can sometimes complicate management of a problem piercing.
When should I seek medical care for a child's ear piercing?
Piercers can help with jewelry fit, irritation, aftercare and many common piercing concerns, but we do not replace medical care.
Seek an appropriate healthcare professional if you are concerned about infection, illness, significant worsening symptoms or your child's overall health.

Children's ear piercing has been a specialized part of Tribal Expression for more than 23 years. Our kids piercers are trained not only to perform a professional piercing, but to work with the individual child sitting in front of them.
Some kids walk in incredibly excited. Some are quiet. Some have twenty questions. Some need an extra few minutes before they are ready.

Kids Piercing Specialist
Iliana Kennedy
Iliana Kennedy is a second-generation professional piercer who has spent approximately four years developing her craft at Tribal Expression, with a particular focus on children's ear piercing.
She was personally apprenticed by her father, Tribal Expression owner Keith Kennedy, whose professional piercing career spans more than three decades.
That apprenticeship included learning what our team calls the Tribal Expression way: combining professional piercing standards with patience, communication and an understanding that a child's first ear piercing can become a lifelong memory.
Advanced Sterilization Education
Iliana also completed the Medical Device Reprocessing program at SAIT, receiving formal education in the cleaning, processing, sterilization and handling of reusable medical devices.
Her training included practical hospital experience, giving her an additional technical perspective on sterilization and infection-control processes alongside her professional piercing education.
Her Approach With Kids
Iliana's goal is not simply to complete the piercing. She wants children to understand what is happening, feel involved in the process and leave feeling proud of what they accomplished.
She is especially comfortable spending the extra time needed with children who are nervous, curious or simply need the appointment explained in a different way.

Sergei
Sergei has been part of the Tribal Expression team for approximately five years and has become one of our frequently requested piercers for children's ear piercing appointments.
Originally from Ukraine, Sergei came to Canada with a very different professional background: before immigrating, he trained and worked as a medical doctor.
Sergei does not practise medicine in Canada. His previous medical background is separate from his work as a professional piercer, but it contributes to the calm, methodical and detail-oriented personality families often appreciate during a child's appointment.

What Happens at a Kids Ear Piercing Appointment?
Knowing what is going to happen can make the day easier for both kids and parents. Here's what a typical children's ear piercing appointment at Tribal Expression looks like.
1. Arrive & Check In
We confirm the appointment and required identification for the parent or legal guardian and the child.
2. Meet Your Piercer
Your child meets their piercer, gets familiar with the space and has a chance to ask questions before anything begins.
3. Choose the Earrings
This is one of the fun parts. Your child can explore available titanium colors, gemstones, shapes and other starter jewelry options.
4. Plan the Placement
We carefully mark the earlobes and look at the placement together before the piercing happens.
5. Make Sure They're Ready
We explain what is going to happen and make sure your child is comfortable continuing. If they need another moment, we give them one.
6. The Piercing
The actual piercing is very quick and is performed using professional sterile single-use piercing needles — never piercing guns.
7. The Mirror Moment
Then comes one of our favourite parts: seeing the finished earrings in the mirror and realizing that they did it.

Kids Ear Piercing Aftercare — What Parents Need to Know
The piercing appointment may only take a short time, but healing continues for months. Good aftercare is mostly about being consistent, keeping things simple and avoiding unnecessary irritation.
Every family receives aftercare instructions at the appointment. The information below gives you the most important basics before you book.
Clean Twice Daily
Our standard routine is to clean children's ear piercings twice each day, approximately 12 hours apart.
More cleaning is not automatically better. Consistency is more important than repeatedly disturbing the piercing.
HOCl Is Our Preferred Cleaner
Tribal Expression currently prefers an appropriate hypochlorous acid (HOCl) piercing-care product for routine cleaning.
Sterile saline remains an acceptable option and was our primary aftercare recommendation for many years.
Don't Twist or Spin
Properly fitted professional piercing jewelry does not need to be routinely twisted, turned or spun.
Unnecessary handling can irritate a healing piercing and introduces more opportunities for contamination.
Avoid Harsh Products
We do not recommend routine use of alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or oil-based ointments on a healing ear piercing.
Follow the aftercare provided by your piercer unless an appropriate healthcare professional gives you different medical instructions.

Protecting New Ear Piercings During Healing
Sleeping
Try to avoid having your child sleep directly on a healing ear.
One simple trick is positioning two pillows with a small gap of roughly one inch between them so the ear can rest over the gap instead of being compressed.
Swimming
When possible, plan new ear piercings away from vacations or periods of frequent swimming.
If your child does swim during healing, clean the piercing once afterward and then return to the normal twice-daily routine rather than repeatedly over-cleaning it.
Sports & Helmets
Contact sports, tight helmets and equipment that presses against the ear require some planning.
Check your child's league or sport rules before booking. Some organizations require jewelry to be removed during competition, which can create a problem with a fresh piercing.
Hair
Long hair can wrap around posts and snag healing jewelry.
Keep hair away from the ears when practical and be careful when brushing, washing and styling. If hair becomes wrapped around a post, gently untangle it rather than pulling on the earring.
Headphones
Avoid headphones or headsets that place direct pressure against the fresh piercing.
Keep headphone surfaces clean and avoid sharing unclean headphones during healing.
Bumps & Snags
Kids are kids. Earrings sometimes get bumped, caught on clothing or accidentally pulled.
If an impact happens, clean the piercing once, inspect the jewelry and contact Tribal Expression if there is significant bleeding, swelling, increasing pain or concern about the jewelry position.

This is the early healing period. Consistent cleaning and protecting the piercing from pressure, snagging and unnecessary handling are especially important.
Stage Two

The ears may look healed from the outside, but the piercing channel is still strengthening internally.
This is why looking healed does not mean the piercing should suddenly be treated like an old, established piercing.
Stage Three
Approximately 6–12 Months
