The apadravya is a straight barbell that runs vertically through the head of the penis. Traditionally it is performed with one piece of jewelry centered on the top of the head. It can be performed as a double piercing, one on each side, for more advanced artists and piercees. This is generally requested by clients who have experienced healing less intense genital work.
Clients who decide to have this piercing should be prepared: this piercing usually passes through at least an inch of tissue which results in a longer healing period. Depending on how well a client takes care of the piercing and their personal health, this could be anywhere from 4 months to 1 year.
This area also being very vascular generally results in bleeding, both during the procedure and afterward. Bleeding can occur for up to a week post-procedure but will gradually slow down over time. Utilizing warm water in your shower is a quick and easy way to soak off and easily remove any dried blood.
Placement for this piercing is crucial, as is seeing a well-versed and very experienced piercer. The head of the penis contains the corpus cavernosum, a pair of sponge-like regions of erectile tissue, which contain most of the blood in the penis during an erection. Piercing through this can cause excessive bleeding and can be quite traumatic for the client, so knowledge of this anatomy is imperative.
If you are experiencing excessive bleeding post-procedure and are concerned, please do not hesitate to contact your piercer or the studio.
Custom jewelry will need to be ordered for this piercing to accommodate the piercees specific anatomy, so a consultation is required. It is not uncommon for us to measure and order a few different sizes of barbells as this piercing does swell, sometimes on and off for a couple of months. The jewelry will need to be downsized, sometimes a few times, before the final fit is determined. An Apadrayva should not be performed in anything smaller than a 10g although most men will find an 8g or 6g more comfortable.
For the most part, this piercing is performed like many others; the area is cleaned and marked and the procedure is either performed using clamps or done freehand with a receiving tube.
