Labret Piercing in Calgary
The classic lower-lip piercing, placed and styled for long-term comfort and a clean, balanced look.
What is a labret piercing?
A labret piercing is a lower lip piercing placed just below the lip line, usually in the center, so the jewelry sits neatly under the lip when your mouth is relaxed. It can be styled very simply with a small bead or gem, or combined with other lip piercings to create vertical labret, snake bites, or more elaborate lower-lip projects.
Unlike bites or multiple piercings along the lip, the traditional labret focuses on a single, well-balanced point under the lower lip. The inside of the piercing sits against the gum side of your lower front teeth, which is why careful jewelry choice and sizing are so important—done correctly, it can be both attractive and comfortable for the long term.
At Tribal Expression in Calgary, we approach labret piercings with both aesthetics and oral health in mind. With more than two decades of experience and our own in-house, implant-grade titanium and gold jewelry, we can style your labret to fit your face, your bite, and your lifestyle—not just today, but years from now.
Am I a good candidate for a labret piercing?
Most people can safely wear a labret piercing, but the details of your bite and lip shape matter. During your consultation, your piercer will look at:
- Lip shape and fullness – Ensures the jewelry sits comfortably and looks centered when you talk and smile.
- Tooth and gum position – We want the back disc to rest gently against the inside of your mouth.
- Existing dental work – Crowns, veneers, or enamel wear can affect sizing and placement.
- Bite pattern and habits – If you press your tongue or teeth on jewelry, we’ll help you manage that.
- Work and lifestyle – Some jobs require subtle jewelry choices—we can make it look clean and discreet.
If your anatomy increases the risk of gum recession or tooth contact, we’ll be honest and guide you toward safer jewelry choices and sizing.
How much does a labret piercing hurt?
A labret piercing is typically straightforward and quick. You can expect:
- A sharp pinch for a moment as the needle passes.
- A brief warm or “stingy” sensation afterward.
- Mild swelling that feels like you bit your lip once.
We guide you through breathing and posture so the experience is controlled and predictable.
How long does a labret piercing take to heal?
Labret piercings usually take 3–4 months for external healing, with the internal channel continuing to strengthen for several months after that.
- Days 1–7: Swelling, tenderness, and unusual lip sensations.
- Weeks 2–6: Improved comfort, but still reactive to bumps.
- Months 2–4: Stabilization; ideal time for downsizing.
Labret piercing aftercare
Labret care involves supporting the outside and inside of the piercing so the tissue can settle without irritation.
Outside care
- Use hypochlorous acid spray 1–2 times daily.
- Let it sit for 30–60 seconds.
- Pat dry gently with a clean paper towel.
Inside care
- Rinse your mouth gently with water after meals.
- If needed: an alcohol-free rinse once or twice daily.
- No chewing or clicking the jewelry.
- Eat smaller bites until the swelling resolves.
Avoid irritants
- Smoking/vaping (slows healing).
- Whitening or alcohol-heavy mouthwashes.
- Playing with the jewelry with your teeth or tongue.
- Changing jewelry early.
What jewelry is best for a labret piercing?
We recommend:
- Flat-back labret posts for gum protection.
- ASTM F-136 titanium or 14k/18k gold.
- Threadless or internally threaded designs.
- Proper initial length followed by a downsize.
Can a labret piercing damage teeth or gums?
It can, but only when improperly sized or played with. We minimize risk through:
- Precise placement.
- High-quality materials.
- Early downsizing.
- Education on safe habits.

Here at Tribal Expression, we implement the highest possible sterilization standards in Canada, the same standards you would see at a plastic surgeon’s office. We feel this is only right as any invasive procedure can be life-threatening if proper sterilization protocols are not met.
We ask that friends and family wait at a nearby coffee shop or in their car during the procedure. Please eat a light snack 30 minutes before your appointment.
