Lip Piercing in Calgary
From subtle single piercings to full “bite” combinations, we design lip piercings around your anatomy, smile, and long-term comfort.
What is a lip piercing?
“Lip piercing” is a broad term that covers piercings placed around the upper and lower lips. These can be centered or off to one side, and can be worn singly or in matched pairs and patterns. Common lip piercing styles include:
- Labret – Centered below the lower lip.
- Vertical labret – Passing vertically through the lower lip with both ends visible.
- Medusa / philtrum – Centered above the upper lip in the philtrum.
- Monroe / Madonna – Upper lip off to one side, styled to mimic a beauty mark.
- “Bites” – Pairs and sets such as snake bites, angel bites, cyber bites, and more.
Each placement has its own anatomical considerations: how it lines up with your teeth, how it sits when you talk and smile, and how it works with your other piercings. A good lip piercing is more than a dot on a photo reference—it’s customized to your face and your bite.
At Tribal Expression in Calgary, we design lip piercings the way a jeweller designs a setting: balancing structure, symmetry, and long-term wear. We combine decades of piercing experience with our own in-house titanium and gold jewelry to create lip projects that look intentional and feel comfortable.
Types of lip piercings we offer
We perform a wide range of lip piercings and combinations. Some of the most popular include:
-
Medusa / Philtrum
Placed in the center groove above the upper lip. Beautiful with a single gem or a small decorative cluster. -
Monroe / Madonna
Upper lip off to one side, styled like a beauty spot. Offers a subtle, classic look that can be dressed up with fine jewelry. -
Labret
Centered under the lower lip. Clean, balanced, and versatile—pairs well with septum and nostril piercings. -
Vertical labret
Passes vertically through the lower lip, with one end on the lip and one just below. No jewelry inside the mouth. -
Bite combinations
Snake bites, angel bites, cyber bites, shark bites, and custom layouts designed to match your anatomy and aesthetic.
During your consultation, we’ll walk through options that fit your face, your existing piercings, and your long-term plans, rather than just copying a placement that worked on someone else’s anatomy.
Am I a good candidate for lip piercings?
Most people can safely wear at least one style of lip piercing, but not every placement is right for every person. During your consultation, your piercer will look at:
- Lip fullness and shape – Ensures the piercing sits naturally and doesn’t pull or flatten the lip.
- Teeth and gum position – Especially important for piercings that have a flat disc inside the mouth.
- Bite pattern – We check where your teeth land when you talk and chew to avoid contact with the jewelry.
- Existing piercings – We line up new work with your current jewelry so the overall layout looks intentional.
- Work, school, and lifestyle – Helps us suggest placements and jewelry styles that fit your daily life.
If a particular lip piercing style carries higher risks for your teeth or gums because of your bite, we’ll explain why and guide you toward safer options—sometimes that means switching to a vertical or adjusting the position slightly.
How much does a lip piercing hurt?
Lip piercings are usually quick and manageable. Most clients describe:
- A brief, sharp pinch as the needle passes through the lip.
- A few seconds of warmth or stinging.
- Mild swelling and tenderness for a few days afterward.
Upper-lip piercings (like Medusa or Monroe) can feel a little “zingy” because of the nerve supply, but the piercing itself is over in a moment. Breathing and body positioning make a big difference—we’ll talk you through every step.
How long do lip piercings take to heal?
Healing time varies a little by placement, but most lip piercings take about:
- 6–8 weeks for early healing.
- 3–4 months for full internal healing.
You’ll likely notice:
- Days 1–5: Swelling, tenderness, and some awkwardness when talking or eating.
- Weeks 2–4: Swelling decreases; day-to-day comfort improves significantly.
- Weeks 4–8: We may downsize the post or barbell for long-term comfort and to protect teeth and gums.
Downsizing to a shorter post or bar is a key step—especially for piercings that have a disc inside the mouth. We’ll book or recommend a downsize once swelling has settled.
Lip piercing aftercare
Lip aftercare has two sides: the skin on the outside, and the inside of the mouth. Both need gentle support—not harsh scrubbing.
Outside care – the skin around the lip
- Use our recommended hypochlorous acid aftercare spray 1–2 times daily (or as directed).
- Spray the piercing from the outside and allow it to sit for 30–60 seconds.
- Gently pat dry with a clean, disposable paper towel—no rubbing, twisting, or spinning the jewelry.
Inside care – mouth and gums
- Rinse gently with plain water after eating to remove food particles.
- If needed, use a mild, alcohol-free mouth rinse once or twice a day.
- Avoid strong antiseptics and whitening mouthwashes—they can irritate the tissue.
- Brush your teeth as normal, but be mindful around the jewelry.
Habits & irritants to avoid
- Don’t chew on, click, or bite the jewelry.
- Avoid playing with the jewelry using your tongue.
- Keep lipstick, gloss, and heavy balms off the piercing until it has settled.
- Minimize smoking or vaping—they slow your body’s healing response.
If you notice a sore spot on your gums, a tooth that the jewelry keeps hitting, or a bump forming near the piercing, contact us for an evaluation—often a simple downsize or jewelry change can help.
What jewelry is best for lip piercings?
The best jewelry depends on the exact placement, but most lip piercings do best with:
-
Flat-back labret posts
Ideal for Medusa, Monroe/Madonna, and many lower-lip placements. A smooth, flat disc sits inside the mouth. -
Straight or curved barbells
Used for vertical lip piercings like vertical labrets or paired lip projects. -
Implant-grade materials
ASTM F-136 titanium made in-house at Tribal Expression, or 14k/18k solid gold ends for those who prefer fine jewelry from day one. -
Threadless or internally threaded designs
Smoother through the piercing and easier to adjust once healed. -
Proper sizing & downsizing
We begin with a slightly longer post for swelling, then fit a shorter post once the tissue has calmed.
Because we manufacture our own jewelry in Calgary, we can customize lengths, disc sizes, and decorative ends to match your anatomy and the look you’re going for.
Can lip piercings damage teeth or gums?
Any piercing that lives near the mouth has the potential to irritate teeth and gums if:
- The jewelry is too long or too large.
- It’s made from poor-quality materials.
- You habitually bite, click, or chew on it.
We minimize this risk with thoughtful placement, proper sizing, high-quality materials, and a strong emphasis on good habits. Regular dental check-ups and honest communication with your piercer keep your smile and piercings healthy.

Lip Piercing FAQ
How long do lip piercings take to heal?
Most lip piercings take about 6–8 weeks for early healing and 3–4 months for full internal healing. A downsize to a shorter post is usually recommended once swelling has settled.
Will a lip piercing affect my teeth or gums?
It can if jewelry is too long or if you habitually bite or click the jewelry. Proper placement, high-quality materials, downsizing, and good habits greatly reduce this risk, and we’ll guide you through all of those steps.
Can I wear lipstick with a new lip piercing?
It’s best to avoid lipstick, gloss, and heavy balms directly over the piercing while it’s fresh. Once healing is further along, you can slowly reintroduce products and see how your skin responds.

Here at Tribal Expression, we implement the highest possible sterilization standards in Canada, the same standards you would see at a plastic surgeon’s office. We feel this is only right as any invasive procedure can be life-threatening if proper sterilization protocols are not met.
We ask that friends and family wait at a nearby coffee shop or in their car during the procedure. Please eat a light snack 30 minutes before your appointment.
