Nostril Piercing in Calgary
One of the most popular and versatile facial piercings, done safely and beautifully at Tribal Expression.
What is a nostril piercing?
A nostril piercing passes through the soft tissue of one side of the nose, usually placed to follow the natural curve of your nostril and complement your facial features. It can be styled very delicately or as part of a bold, layered look with hoops, chains, and multiple piercings.
For many people, a nostril piercing is their first facial piercing and often their first step beyond earlobes. It’s a classic that works on almost every face and can be worn with simple gold dots, tiny diamonds, or more elaborate designs as your style evolves.
At Tribal Expression in Calgary, nostril piercings are one of the procedures we perform most often. Over more than two decades of facial piercing, we’ve refined our approach to placement, jewelry, and aftercare to give you the best chance at a smooth heal and a piercing you’ll love long-term.
Am I a good candidate for a nostril piercing?
Most people are excellent candidates for nostril piercings, but we still take the time to assess your individual anatomy and lifestyle. During your consultation, your piercer will look at:
- Nostril shape and thickness – We’ll choose a placement and angle that sits correctly on your nostril and supports the jewelry you want to wear.
- Existing piercings or scars – Previous nostril piercings or trauma can affect where we can safely place a new one.
- Work and lifestyle – Jobs that require tight masks, respirators, or helmets, as well as contact sports, can increase irritation and healing time.
- Allergy history and skin sensitivity – We’ll recommend the safest materials for you, such as implant-grade titanium or solid gold.
If anything about your anatomy makes a particular placement or jewelry choice less ideal, we’ll explain why and offer safer alternatives rather than just “putting it wherever” and hoping for the best.
Should I start with a hoop or a stud?
This is one of the most common questions about nostril piercings. While healed nostril piercings look amazing with hoops, we strongly prefer to start with a stud for healing.
-
Stud (flat-back labret)
This is our go-to choice. A flat-back labret sits securely, is less likely to twist or “lever” in the piercing, and greatly reduces irritation and the risk of bumps. It also gives you more options for decorative tops. -
Nostril screws
These were the industry norm for years, but most modern studios – including ours – have transitioned to flat-backs because they’re more stable and more comfortable for many clients. -
Hoops
Hoops move more, catch more, and put more pressure on fresh tissue. They can be beautiful once you’ve healed, but we usually recommend waiting until the piercing is well on its way before switching to a ring.
If you’re dreaming of a hoop in the long run, we’ll place the piercing with that in mind so that your future ring sits correctly once you’re healed.
How much does a nostril piercing hurt?
Most people rate nostril piercings as quick and manageable. You can expect:
- A sharp, brief pinch as the needle passes through
- Your eyes to water on that side of your face (this is a normal reflex, not a sign of something wrong)
- Mild tenderness and a “sunburn-like” feeling for a short time afterward
The entire piercing itself takes only a moment. Careful breathing and a calm, steady approach from your piercer make a big difference in how the experience feels.
How long does a nostril piercing take to heal?
Nostril piercings usually take around 4–6 months to heal, sometimes longer if they see a lot of irritation from masks, glasses, or frequent touching.
You’ll likely notice:
- Weeks 1–4: Swelling, tenderness, some redness, and occasional clear discharge that dries into “crusties” around the jewelry.
- Weeks 4–12: The piercing gradually feels less reactive, but can still flare if bumped or if a mask rubs on it.
- After 3–6 months: The piercing feels more stable and less sensitive. This is often when we start talking about downsizing the post or changing jewelry.
Even when it looks “fine” from the outside, the inner channel continues to remodel for months. That’s why waiting for your piercer’s go-ahead before changing jewelry is so important.
Nostril piercing aftercare
A nostril piercing heals best when it’s kept clean, gently supported, and not over-handled. Most bumps and problems come from irritation, pressure, or harsh products rather than a lack of cleaning.
Clean, don’t scrub
- Use the hypochlorous acid aftercare spray we recommend 1–2 times daily (or as directed).
- Spray the piercing from the outside until the area is fully saturated.
- Let it sit for 30–60 seconds to dissolve dried discharge.
- Gently pat dry with a clean, disposable paper towel – no cotton balls, no twisting the jewelry.
Protect the piercing from friction and pressure
- Be very careful with masks; straps and fabric rubbing on the jewelry are a major cause of bumps.
- Take extra care when drying your face with a towel so you don’t snag the jewelry.
- Avoid sleeping directly on that side while it’s fresh.
- Keep makeup, foundation, and self-tanner away from the piercing until it’s well on its way to healing.
Common irritants to avoid
- Touching or “checking” the jewelry all day
- Spinning, twisting, or pushing the post back and forth
- Using harsh products like alcohol, peroxide, tea tree oil, or strong cleansers on the piercing
If you’re unsure whether what you’re seeing is normal healing, a bump, or infection, send us clear photos or book a quick check. It’s always easier to calm down a mild irritation than to fix something that’s been aggravated for months.
What jewelry is best for a nostril piercing?
We start nostril piercings with high-quality, implant-grade jewelry that gives your body the best chance at a smooth heal:
-
Flat-back labret studs
Our preferred choice for initial healing. They sit securely, are comfortable on the inside of the nostril, and make future jewelry changes much easier. -
Implant-grade materials
ASTM F-136 titanium (manufactured in-house by Tribal), 14k and 18k solid gold, niobium, or other specialty materials for specific needs. -
Secure connection styles
Internally threaded or threadless systems that are smoother through tissue and less likely to trap debris.
Once you’re healed and downsized, we can explore hoops, ornate settings, clusters, chains, and custom pieces. Because we design and manufacture jewelry in Calgary, we can tailor the look to your face and your other piercings.
Nostril piercing bumps & troubleshooting
Small bumps near a nostril piercing are almost always a sign of irritation or a local immune response – not proof that the piercing is “infected forever” or doomed to fail.
Common triggers include:
- Hoops worn too early or rings that are too tight
- Mask friction and constant rubbing
- Sleeping on the piercing repeatedly
- Over-cleaning or using harsh products
- Accidental snags and bumps that never get a chance to calm down
In most cases, when we remove the cause of irritation and go back to gentle, consistent aftercare, bumps improve or resolve over time. If you notice a bump starting, the sooner you reach out to us, the easier it is to course-correct.
How is a nostril piercing done at Tribal Expression?
Your nostril piercing appointment typically includes:
-
Consultation & marking
We discuss which side you prefer, how the piercing will sit with your features and other jewelry, and your long-term goals (studs, hoops, or both). Then we carefully mark the spot and have you check it from multiple angles. -
Visible sterilization
Your jewelry, needle, and any tools are sterilized individually in a Statim 5000 cassette sterilizer. At our Calgary studio, you can see your cassette loaded and run, so you know your setup is specifically for you. -
Piercing process
The inside and outside of the nostril are cleaned. A receiving tube or support is placed inside to brace the tissue. After a few calm breaths, the needle passes through and the jewelry follows in one smooth motion. -
Aftercare & downsize plan
We’ll go over cleaning, what’s normal to expect, warning signs to watch for, and when to come back for a shorter post or a jewelry change.

Nostril Piercing FAQ
How long does a nostril piercing take to heal?
Most nostril piercings take about 4–6 months to heal, sometimes longer if they see a lot of irritation from masks or frequent bumps. Even when it looks good from the outside, the inner channel is still maturing for several months.
Does a nostril piercing hurt a lot?
A nostril piercing is usually over in a second and feels like a sharp, brief pinch followed by a short period of warmth or tenderness. Your eyes will often water on that side – that’s a normal reflex, not a sign of a problem.
Should I start with a hoop or a stud?
For best healing, we strongly recommend starting with a stud such as a flat-back labret. Hoops move more and create more pressure on fresh tissue, so they are better saved for later once the piercing has settled.
What causes bumps on a nostril piercing?
Most nostril bumps are caused by irritation – things like mask friction, sleeping on the piercing, bumping or snagging the jewelry, using harsh products, or changing jewelry too early. Removing the source of irritation and going back to gentle aftercare usually helps them calm down.
When can I change the jewelry in my nostril piercing?
Timing depends on how you heal, but many people are ready for a downsize or first change around the 3–4 month mark. It is always best to check in with your piercer rather than guessing, especially if you want to switch to a hoop.

Here at Tribal Expression, we implement the highest possible sterilization standards in Canada, the same standards you would see at a plastic surgeon’s office. We feel this is only right as any invasive procedure can be life-threatening if proper sterilization protocols are not met.
We ask that friends and family wait at a nearby coffee shop or in their car during the procedure. Please eat a light snack 30 minutes before your appointment.
