Whether you are coming to Tribal Expression for your first earlobe piercing as a child or having previous piercings redone after an earlobe repair, we have experienced piercers to handle any situation.

Earlobe piercings are traditionally one of the first piercings for many people. They also tend to be easier to heal and a good “starter” piercing for someone who may become a piercing enthusiast.

Piercing has evolved so much in the past few years and earlobe piercings have been one of the biggest to take a new direction. The idea of stacked lobes has taken the industry by storm. Piercers and clients alike now have much more room for creativity with not only jewelry, but unique placements as well.

Generally, they are placed in the center of the fleshy part of your lobe, but there are certainly exceptions. If you are planning to stretch, the mark should be placed slightly higher, so that as the piercing is stretched larger the hole will stay in the center of the earlobe. Proper placement ensures there will be ample tissue to stretch to the client’s desired size while still looking aesthetically pleasing. Our piercers will discuss future earlobe piercings with clients to make sure ample room is left for multiple piercings or to accommodate plans for a curated ear project.

Don’t expect too much pain from this piercing; it’s fairly easy and usually nothing more than a little pinch. If it is your very first piercing, being anxious and nervous is expected. But, the process is very quick and our piercing staff will walk you through everything step by step.

Make sure you eat a full meal before your appointment.  Keeping your blood sugar up can lessen the chance of feeling lightheaded afterward. This is strongly recommended for those of you who are first-timers and may be more anxious than others, or for those who have a history of fainting.

The piercing process is actually very quick and easy; marking the earlobes evenly will generally be the lengthiest part of the appointment as most of us do not have symmetrical ears.

Once the earlobes have been cleaned with alcohol, disinfected with iodine, and marked, the piercer will have you approve the marks, lay you back, and get started. The method of how an earlobe piercing is done depends on the piercer you see. Some of us will use forceps or clamps to hold the tissue, others will use their fingers or something called a receiving tube to brace the back of the earlobe; any of these methods are essentially used just to hold the tissue in place during the procedure.

Once the tissue is secure, the needle is placed on the mark. You will take a couple of deep breaths and, before you know it, the process is done. The jewelry is essentially used to push the needle out of the piercing channel; sometimes this is done with the aid of a tool called an insertion taper. Then a bead is either inserted or screwed on and it’s finished. Do not be surprised if the area bleeds. Some piercings will bleed, some won’t; this is common and perfectly normal. If an earlobe bleeds more than usual, this can sometimes lead to bruising seen at the back of the earlobe. Again, this is normal and the bruising will fade over time. Your piercer will clean the area of any blood, lube or marker and you will be on your way to show off your new adornment!
