Industrial Piercing at Tribal Expression
Anatomy-Based Ear Bar Piercing, Custom Designed for Your Ear
Industrial piercings — sometimes called ear bar piercings or scaffold piercings — are one of the
most striking ear piercings you can get. A single straight barbell connects two separate cartilage piercings,
usually across the upper ear, creating a bold, architectural look.
At Tribal Expression, we treat industrials as one of our most anatomy-dependent piercings. Unlike
some placements that can be adapted to almost any ear, an industrial piercing must respect your unique ear shape,
cartilage angles, and tension lines to heal successfully. For this reason, we customize every industrial and, when
needed, suggest alternatives like floating industrials that follow your natural anatomy instead of
forcing a straight line where it doesn’t belong.
What Is an Industrial Piercing?
A traditional industrial piercing is a pair of cartilage piercings connected by a single 14ga straight
barbell. Most commonly, it runs from:
- The upper outer helix (near the top of the ear)
- To a second point further down along the helix ridge
When everything lines up correctly, the bar rests naturally across the ear, both ends sit comfortably, and the
piercing can heal into a sleek, strong accent that pairs beautifully with other ear piercings.
But this is only possible when your anatomy allows it — and that’s where Tribal Expression’s experience really
matters.
Industrial Piercing Is an Anatomy-Dependent Piercing
Not every ear is built for a traditional industrial. Some ears are perfect for the classic bar. Others are better
suited to alternate industrial styles, such as a floating industrial or custom bar placement.
During your consultation, we examine:
- The height, angle, and thickness of your upper helix ridge
- How your helix curves as it moves down toward the mid-ear
- Any existing piercings or scar tissue in the area
- Your ear’s natural “tension lines” — where cartilage wants to sit
- How your ear moves when you sleep on it, wear glasses, or use headphones
Our goal is never to “force” a straight bar through unwilling cartilage. Instead, we design an industrial (or an
alternative) that works with your ear, not against it. This is how we reduce long-term irritation, bumps, and
rejection.
Why Choose Tribal Expression for Industrial Piercing?

An industrial piercing is a commitment — it usually takes longer to heal than lobes, and complications are more
likely when it’s done without proper anatomical planning. At Tribal Expression, you benefit from:
- Over 22 years of experience with complex cartilage and multi-point piercings
- Advanced anatomy-based placement, not “one size fits all” angles
- Custom 14ga industrial barbells made in-house for better fit and comfort
- Medical-grade individual sterilization for all tools and jewelry
- Thorough aftercare education, including modern hypochlorous acid options
- A team that will tell you honestly if your ear is better suited to an alternate industrial style
When you search for industrial piercing Calgary, ear bar piercing, or floating industrial,
you want a studio that understands both the look you want and the anatomy required to support it. That’s exactly
where we focus our expertise.
Our Industrial Piercing Process

We treat industrial piercings like the detailed, multi-step cartilage procedures they are. Here’s what you can
expect at Tribal Expression:
1. Consultation & Ear Mapping
Your piercer will begin with a full assessment of your ear, checking:
- Whether a traditional industrial is anatomically realistic
- Which points match best for a straight bar path
- Whether a floating or alternate industrial would work better
- How your ear shape will affect jewelry angle over time
We’ll review your options together and decide whether a classic industrial bar, a floating industrial, or another
variation is the best choice for your ear and your long-term goals.
2. Jewelry Selection (14ga Only)
All industrial piercings at Tribal Expression are performed with 14 gauge (14ga) barbells crafted
from implant-grade titanium or high-karat gold. This gauge provides:
- Better strength for longer spans across the ear
- More stability in cartilage over time
- Compatibility with a wide range of decorative attachments
Because we make jewelry in-house, we can fine-tune the bar length, end style, and finish quality to match your
ear and your design preferences.
3. Individual Sterilization
Your industrial bar and all necessary instruments are processed via individual sterilization in
our Statim sterilizers. Each cycle is verified with Class 5 integrators and printed records. Tools are delivered
to the piercing room in a sealed cassette and opened just for you.
4. Marking & Angle Check
For a traditional industrial, we carefully mark both piercing points while you’re in a relaxed, natural position.
We then visualize how the bar will sit when healed and check:
- Angle between entry and exit points
- Natural cartilage curve and tension
- Clearance from the edge of the ear and surrounding tissue
For floating or alternate industrials, we adapt marks to follow your anatomy, not force it.
5. Piercing Procedure
The industrial is done as two separate piercings using a single-use sterile hollow needle for each
entry/exit point. The bar is then inserted through both piercings, and we check for:
- Balanced tension (not too tight or too loose)
- Even seating of both ends
- Room for initial swelling
6. Aftercare & Follow-Up
We review aftercare expectations, healing times, and how to avoid common irritations (like headphones, helmets, or
hair snagging). You’ll know what’s normal, what’s not, and when to come back for a checkup.
Traditional Industrial vs. Floating Industrial Piercings
Traditional Industrial (Classic Ear Bar)

An overhead, top-down view of a client lying comfortably as their industrial piercing with a blue anodized titanium barbell is showcased. This angle highlights the straight, clean alignment and classic industrial look Tribal Expression is known for.
The classic industrial bar runs across the upper ear from one helix point to another. When your anatomy supports
it, it creates a clean, straight line and a bold look that pairs beautifully with other piercings.
However, if your helix ridge is:
- Too shallow
- Too angled forward
- Uneven from top to mid-ear
- Compromised by previous piercings or scar tissue
Forcing a straight bar across that area can lead to ongoing pressure, bumps, and long-term discomfort. That’s
where a floating industrial becomes an excellent alternative.
Floating Industrial – A Customized Alternative

A stunning sideways profile of an ear with a floating industrial bar piercing, where a sleek titanium bar seems to hover between two cartilage piercings. This modern industrial ear project from Tribal Expression in Calgary creates a bold, elevated look while following clean anatomy-based placement.
A floating industrial is still a barbell connecting two piercings, but instead of following the
classic “helix-to-helix” path, it is designed to follow your ear’s natural structure. For example:
- A top piercing in the helix
- A second piercing placed through the flat of the ear or another stable cartilage zone
The result is a bar that appears “industrial-like” from the front, but it floats along an angle
that your ear can comfortably support. This approach often:
- Reduces tension on both piercing sites
- Improves healing potential
- Minimizes long-term irritation and bump formation
- Allows clients with “non-traditional” ears to enjoy an industrial-style look
At Tribal Expression, we often recommend a floating industrial when a traditional industrial would require us to
fight against your anatomy. Our philosophy is simple: a well-planned floating industrial almost always heals
better than a forced traditional one.
Other Industrial Variations
Depending on your anatomy and ear project, we may also discuss customized options, such as:
- Custom-angle industrial bars that connect two unique points across the ear
- Helix-to-flat combinations that mimic the industrial look while respecting cartilage shape
- Curved industrial-style bars in select cases where a straight line is not ideal
These are always decided on a case-by-case basis after an in-person anatomy assessment. Our priority is long-term
comfort and healthy tissue, not just forcing a trend.
Industrial Piercing Healing & Aftercare

A bottle of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) piercing aftercare spray, the gentle, modern way to clean fresh piercings. Tribal Expression in Calgary recommends hypochlorous acid as a simple, effective option to support healing while being kind to the skin and piercing channel.
Industrial piercings are among the slower-healing ear piercings because they involve two cartilage
piercings connected by a single piece of jewelry. Movement or irritation at one end affects the other.
- Initial phase: 4–6 months of active healing and vulnerability
- Full healing: Often 9–12+ months, depending on your body and lifestyle
To support healing, we recommend:
- Avoiding sleeping directly on the industrial side
- Being careful with headphones, helmets, hats, and hair
- Not twisting, turning, or playing with the bar
- Keeping hair products and makeup away from the piercing
Bumps, Irritation & Hypochlorous Acid for Industrials
Because industrial piercings span a large portion of the ear, they are more prone to bumps and irritation if the
bar is under constant pressure or frequently bumped. Common triggers include:
- Sleeping on the piercing
- Wearing tight hats or headphones
- Barbells that are too short or too long
- Snagging hair, masks, or clothing
- Over-cleaning with harsh, drying products
When a bump appears, it’s usually the body’s immune response reacting to ongoing irritation — not
necessarily an infection. Our goal is to identify and reduce the source of that irritation.
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) as a Modern Aftercare Tool
At Tribal Expression, we often incorporate hypochlorous acid (HOCl) into aftercare plans for
cartilage piercings, including industrials. HOCl:
- Is a skin-compatible molecule your body naturally produces in small amounts
- Helps reduce surface microorganisms without harsh burning or drying
- Supports a calm, clean healing environment
Used properly, HOCl can be an excellent complement to gentle care and good jewelry fit. In the studio, we can
assess your piercing and show you how to incorporate HOCl into a simple, sustainable routine that works with your
body rather than fighting it.
Industrial Piercing FAQ
Can everyone get an industrial piercing?
No. Industrial piercings are highly anatomy-dependent. Some ears are perfect for a traditional bar, others are
better suited to floating or alternate styles, and some are not good candidates at all. We’ll always be honest
about what will and won’t work for your ear.
Does an industrial piercing hurt?
Industrial piercings do involve two cartilage piercings in one procedure, so you can expect a stronger sensation
than a single helix or lobe piercing. Most clients describe it as a sharp, quick pinch followed by pressure.
When can I change my industrial jewelry?
Because industrials take longer to heal, jewelry changes are usually delayed longer than with other piercings.
We recommend coming in for an assessment before changing the bar so we can make sure the timing — and the new
jewelry — is appropriate.
What if my ear isn’t suitable for a traditional industrial?
In many cases, we can design a floating industrial or another custom variation that still gives
you an industrial-inspired look while respecting your anatomy. If it truly isn’t advisable, we’ll help you explore
other ear piercing combinations that look just as impressive.
